During the 1960s in Chile, Margarita, a happy 10-year-old girl, brave, agile, free, and connected with nature, is the protagonist of the biggest earthquake in history, which was followed by a destructive tidal wave. The huge wave destroys everything and drags Margarita's mother, leaving the girl devastated by the terrible loss.

The film tells the mystical story of her mother, Cecilia, who resists death by introducing her soul into the body of a Sperm Whale, so she can be close to her daughter Margarita and her family. With the poignant force of mother-daughter love, and thanks to her magic, all physical limits will be transcended so they can be together again, in a setting of exuberant southern Chilean nature.

Margarita will have to rediscover the strength and meaning of life to overcome her pain and be happy again, while she faces her father who has become a whale hunter. To overcome obstacles, she will be aided by the bonds she forms with her cranky grandfather, her loyal friends, and her special connection to the sea. With all this support she will try to collect the five stones with which she will be able to free her mother's soul from the body of the whale so she can rest in peace.
